The Leicester Freemen's Estate

Backgound to the Charity

The Leicester Freemen's Estate is a Registered Charity No 244732.

The charity is administered by up to 21 Deputies which as a corporate body is known as "The Leicester Freemen's Deputies".

The Charity is currently established under The Charities (Leicester Freemen’s Estate) Order 1977. The rules governing the Charity are detailed in a document titled “Statutory Instruments” dated 1977.

The Charity exists to serve hereditary Freemen of Leicester and their widows and is run by Freemen who volunteer to become Deputies (deemed to be Trustees by the Charity Commission).

Funding for the Charity comes from the compulsory purchase of land that belonged to the Freemen of Leicester for many centuries.

When the last of the Freemen's lands known as Freemen’s Common were purchased by the City Council in the 1960s, funds raised were used to purchase an area of 7.5 acres in Aylestone, Leicester, now known as Freemen’s Holt. Thirty-six bungalows and other facilities were built, with surplus funds being invested in shares and gilts to generate an ongoing income for the Charity.

To administer and manage the Leicester Freemen’s Estate charity conforming to its rules and regulations for the benefit of aged needy Freemen of Leicester, their widows and future generations of Freemen.
