The Organisation of the Board

Up to 21 Deputies may serve on the Board but, during 2009, the Board was made up of 15 Deputies who met quarterly to review the workings of four sub-committees: Welfare and Pensions, Property and Estates, General Purpose and Finance, which all met monthly. All Deputies serve on the Board as well as other sub-committees as required.

The Leicester Freemen’s Estate Charity:

Is registered with the Charity Commission for England & Wales under Charity No 244732.

Belongs to the Almshouse Association to ensure that the Charity is aware of updated legislation, and the initiatives of other similar organisations.

Subscribes to “Factsheets” from Age Concern that are continuously updated with information and advice on all matters relating to older people.

Works in co-operation with “The Gild of Freemen of the City of Leicester” who organise social and regalia events.

Funds and distributes The Gildhall News which is produced by the Gild and details organised social functions. This quarterly publication is sent out to all Freemen and Freemen’s widows as well as associate members of the Gild.

The Gild of Freemen

The Gild of Freemen is a group of Freemen of the City of Leicester who in 1977 formed a separate group to organise social and regalia activities. The Gild is run by Freemen volunteers and is known as the Court.

The Gild gains their funds from subscriptions, fund-raising and donations from members and associate members. The Gild is not run by the charity of the Board of the Deputies although some Deputies are also Gild officers.

There is a strong link between the Gild and the Town Hall where Freemen in their regalia are invited to special occasions organised by the Lord Mayor.

A Freeman can choose pay the subscription and be a member of the Gild but opting out does not mean that they are no longer a Freeman. The Freedom once given remains with the person for life.
